Jacques Villeneuve charged to the front at the start of the European Grand Prix, moving past pole sitter and teammate Damon Hill, who had dominated the weekend up until the drop of the green flag. Hill was engaged in a tight battle for third place with Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello when he was forced to pit on lap 20. He re-joined the race in 11th place and after a minor incident with Pedro Diniz, slipped all the way back to 13th. While victory was all but taken away from Hill, he did manage to fight his way back and finish fourth.

Villeneuve meanwhile drove a faultless race, holding off defending F-1 champion Michael Schumacher for the checkered flag.
