A dramatic start to the Italian Grand Prix saw Jean Alesi rocket from sixth up to first, passing both Williams' cars. Damon Hill forced his teammate, Jacques Villeneuve, wide at the first chicane, damaging the car. By the end of the first lap, Hill had chased down Alesi and moved past him to take first place. But his day came to an end on lap five, when Hill clipped the tires coming out of the chicane, spinning him out of the race. Villeneuve continued to struggle, ultimately being lapped by race leaders Alesi and Schumacher on lap 29.

Schumacher took advantage of pit stops to eventually pass Alesi and in the final moments of the race, set two new lap records to take the checkered flag. Villeneuve settled for seventh, one lap down.
